Lily cocked her head to the side, a questioning, enthrallled gesture as she listened intently. Her eyes fluttered shut, her senses reaching, not only to listen with her own ears, but to listen through the earth, feel the vibrations in each chord as it struck home. She could sense the notes of sadness within the music, and felt the earth answer in kind, it's own sadness rising. It was beautiful sound, the music, and heartbreaking from both ends, because it wasn't just the earth that was in a bad place. She could feel that her new friend was as well- for already, she considered him a friend even if she didn't know that he wasn't just a human.

When the melody was over, Valentine let the saxophone sink away from his mouth; it caught the morning light, gleamed hard and sharp. He pursed his lips, then shrugged. An unnecessary movement.
He didn't say anything for a second. He just looked at the girl -- his sister's age. He'd never hit on a girl that young. Then he smiled: "You're a Sensitive, huh?"
It was a tightly questioning sort of question -- see if she'd hippy it up, or if she'd actually understand what he'd sensed in her and respond to it. "I'm Valentine Crow. Just Val's fine, though." He offered Lily his hand.

Lily's eyes fluttered open, bright green for a moment before slowly fading back into their regular dark brown. But if you looked close enough, one would see the flecks of green like shards of stain glass etched into the brown. A sign that Earth was very much in tune with Lily, or the Earth of today. But Lily didn't know that. She didn't really know anything really, except when it had to do with nature. Like the Nightworld for instance; she was still learning.
With a smile, she took the offered hand and introduced herself as well. "Lily Tomlinson, but you can just call me Lily. What's a Sensitive?"

"Water Lily," he said, with a grin that was almost lighthearted. He was a big brother, yo. He knew how to tease a girl.
Then: he cocked his head. Owlish. "A sensitive is someone who has intuitions that sometimes turn out to be right. Someone who gets feelings. Or maybe has dreams that turn out to mean something besides just what Freud wants 'em to mean."
And this? This was the trick, see. Feel her out. She could be a lost witch for all he knew. Feel her out for happy-go-lucky newager who just convinces themself that they're "sensitive" or someone who really is.

Lily wrinkled her nose at the name. Water... Lily... Water was so not her thing. And then she listened, always the intent listener, to his explanation.
And then she shook her head, slightly confused, more apologetic. "Hmm, no. I only have memories when I dream, not predictions. And my only intuition is centered completely around nature."
Oh, she was beginning to tell too much. He'd think her weird. But then again... Laurel hadn't thought her weird. It had been a surprise, but she'd been a witch... even if she hadn't ever heard of Old Powers, but still...

Val stretched his legs out, balancing the saxophone across his lap. He held it with skill, even when he was relaxed. "What do you mean?" he said. Then, with a crinkle of the eyes, "Don't worry about sounding crazy. Trust me, I'm pretty open minded."

But before Lily could be completely honest, she just had to ask, because he was really striking that familiarity in her. "First, tell me, are you a witch? Because I can only tell you if you give an honest answer."
And she'd tell, too, if he was. She'd ask the earth if she had too... but she didn't think him the lying type, so she really wasn't worried.

"Do you think you would know if I was telling the truth or not?" Val said, seriously and after a hesitation. Lily seemed sincere -- and had her eyes glowed green earlier? That wasn't normal.
That wasn't necessarily a witch thing, though. Not necessarily.

"Your hesitation tells me that you're a witch," Lily said brightly, because she was very sure of it now. "So you see, you just ruined your chances before they had even started. Owned!"
She leaned forward and poked him in the head, but it wasn't a mean poke, but a friendly one of teasing. "So, do you want me to tell you or not? And you have to promise not to tell anyone else or blow a gasket. Or I'll sic a tree on you, kay?"

Valentine chuckled. It was a comfortable sound: sage-smoke and dawn-dapple. "I can't promise not to tell anyone until I know what you're going to tell me. But I would never spread rumours. You're welcome to sic a tree on me if you think I deserve it."

Lily pursed her lips, thinking that it really wouldn't be a good idea to spread what she would tell him. The other Powers would probably take him out... and then she'd have a lot of people knocking down her door to take advantage of her powers. Ugh.
"Well," Lily started slowly, unsure of how to explain that would seem ridiculous, "What do you know about The Old Powers?"

The question made him look -- something between sad and haunted. He couldn't help but think of Marit. He just couldn't help it. And when he thought of Marit, he thought about the visions she'd pressed into his mind -- although they weren't as clear as they had been. And he also thought about the fight he and his sister had had the night before about soulmates and old powers.
---
" - I think that she is. No, I know that she is." "Oh, come on." "They say that the Old Powers are rising, Bea." "So what?" "You know that." ". . ." "And they say that because the old powers are stirring so many are really finding their soulmates -- " "Jesus Fucking Christ Sucking Coyote Off. That's STUPID." " -- in places they wouldn't look, wouldn't want to look -- " "The Old Powers don't have anything to do with this soulmate bullshit!"
---
"They say they're rising," he says, with an ironic little smile. "That things're changing because of it."

"Mmhmm, so I've heard," Lily said, smiling with wry amusement. "And I don't really disagree, but I can't quite agree either. But what I mean is, What do you know about them? Of the legend?"

"The legend?" he said, blankly. "I know that they're Forces of Nature. That there're Four of them -- at least there are usually Four of them in the stories. Sometimes more, but it depends on your source. They created the world. The first witches were very close to them."
Then he frowned. "Mom thinks that -- well. Mom thinks that they can be contained inside -- " He frowned more deeply. He wasn't really comfortable talking about his mother's theories. "Mom has some other theories, but." He shrugged, eloquently.
ooc: Hope that's an okay answer -- Val'd just know what every witch knows, nothing more ('cuz Dark definitely isn't enlightening him, heh).

((It's cool with me. Lily can totally fill in the rest. )) Lily nodded shortly, and then took to staring down into the fountain. "Well, that's what most witches know today, isn't it?" she said lightly. "Kind of like a bedtime story to tell the witchlets and all. I guess as time passes, the story gets vaguer and vaguer. But legend once said that The Old Powers were once people. Power contained in a living body, worshiped as living Gods until war came between them." Her she paused, trying to keep her voice steady around her nervousness, thinking over her words. "So... if now the Nightworld believes that the Old Powers are rising, they think it's just power causing chaos. But if you go by the old legend... it would go to stand that they're rising because they've been reborn again, and as they grow older, and their powers grow stronger, it would cause quite the ruckus in the balance of the Nightworld, right?"
